The popularity of blogging online is probably due to the ease of which you can get started. Blog platforms like Blogger and WordPress allow you to easily create a blog and change the design without knowing a whole lot of technical stuff.
Stay at home moms, college students and the kid next door with a passion for music are some of the people who are all blogging.
Besides passion, blogging for money is a very popular incentive for getting started. There are many programs available that will help you generate an income from your blog.
So just how exactly do blogs generate income?
Basically, there are three main methods:
You can sell advertising space on your blog to advertisers. Popular blogs get approached all the time by advertisers who will pay hundreds per month just to place a banner on a blog.
Readership (how many people are reading a particular blog), traffic and the overall brand of the blog are reasons why an advertiser many approach you and these reasons also influence how much you get paid.
Even if you’re not hugely popular, Google has a program called Google AdSense that you can use to make money from your blog.
With this method, the advertisers pay Google and they in turn syndicates the ads to blogs all across the internet. When visitors click on the ads, the blog owner gets paid anywhere from a few cents to a few dollars per click.
There are blogs that make hundred per day with Google AdSense but if you’re just starting out, don’t expect to make that much.
There are other programs you can use to sell advertising on your site such as Kontera and Infolinks.
2. Affiliate Marketing
Affiliate marketing is my favorite method for generating an income through blogging.
This method involves signing up with affiliate programs and promoting them via your blog for a percentage of the sales.
You can make anywhere from a few dollars to thousands for each sale. The possibilities are endless since there are tens of thousands of affiliate programs online ranging from popular and well known merchants like Amazon, iTunes, Target and Walmart to little known merchants belonging to networks like ClickBank and Paydotcom.
Writing reviews and articles on these products and putting them on your blog is one way to generate an income with affiliate marketing. You can also use your blog to build a list of email subscribers that you can market to.
3. Selling Products and Services
This is yet another option you can use. I know some popular people like authors who’s blogs are based around their books and writings. Musicians also have blogs to connect with their fans and market their music.
In much the same way, you can sell your own products and services from your blog. You may be an expert at something. Why not create a guide that shows people how to do that something. Sell it from your blog in addition to the other methods mentioned here.
There are others who run membership sites, sell physical goods and promote their writing services via their blog.
Imagination as well as using what is available is the key to generating income from your blog.
